Anti-rollbacks and lift safety
Ratchets on the lift hill prevent backward roll — one of many layered safety systems.
Anti-rollback devices (dogs or pawls) engage a toothed rail on the lift. If the chain tension drops, the pawl catches the next tooth instead of letting the train roll back.
This is separate from the chain dog that pulls you up — both work together on classic lifts.
Modern systems add sensors, clutches, and controlled lift motor braking. Never assume you understand full safety logic from the guest side; operations teams follow manufacturer procedures when a lift stops mid-hill.
From a rider perspective: the clicking sound is normal on many chain lifts, not a sign something is wrong.
