What makes a coaster feel intense?

Thrill is force, pacing, and novelty — not just height. Fans often rank rides they cannot easily “predict.”

Learn/Culture & community

Intensity is subjective, but enthusiasts often talk about a few repeatable factors:

Positive G-force pushes you into the seat — big drops and tight loops deliver it. Negative G (airtime) lifts you against the restraint. Lateral G shoves you side to side in flat turns and snaps.

Pacing is how quickly those forces arrive. A ride with one huge element and long calm sections can feel mild overall; a compact layout can feel wild at moderate height.

Novelty matters too — wing seats, floorless trains, backward-facing cars, or a first-of-its-kind element can make a mid-sized ride memorable.

Coaster Atlas uses a thrill score in Explorer to sort the dataset by combined stats. Treat it as a compass, not a verdict. Your ride log and ratings are the personal layer on top.
